Cinema is not just a form of entertainment but it is actually a medium of expressing your thoughts, vision and imagination through the lens of a camera. The power of cinema is clearly visible through movies which make people believe in love stories, coincidences, actions and the out-of-the-box imagination. Exploring this unique imagination and curiosity of human mind, several sci-fi movies have emerged from time to time to entertain people all across the globe.

While some of them may have tanked at the box office without any trace, there are other movies who clearly emerged as the “big boss” in terms of the box office success and worldwide revenue collection. If you are a great movie buff or cinephile, here is the list of various all-time favourite sci-fi Hollywood movies that will give a real fodder to your imagination.

  • 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)

Let us start our fictional and exciting journey with this 1968 Stanley Kubrick’s classic which is a brilliant work of metaphysics, special effects and psychological chain of events that makes it only better with age. The plot unfolds when a team of five men goes into space to investigate the artificial object buried in lunar surface but ends with a misadventure due to a fault of chatty command computer, Hal. Following the series of events, later on, the sole surviving astronaut is lost in space and wanders through galaxy where he ages fast, dies, is reborn again and finally reaches Earth somehow to lead the evolution on the planet.

Well, the name of renowned director Ridley Scott needs no introduction at all. We already knew him by the marvellous movies like Blade Runner, Gladiator, The Duellists, American Gangster and others. This 1979 science fiction horror movie, Alien made people familiar with the dreadful creature from the outer world. The plot revolves around a commercial spacecraft that tracks down a signal from an alien spacecraft on the moon and encounters a mysterious creature on landing. The ruthless advanced killing machine or alien was the brainchild of talented painter H.R. Giger and quickly became an instant hit among the audience.

  • ET: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

While the above alien was menacing and terrifying, this one straight out from the directorial hat of maverick Steven Spielberg was actually cute, adorable and friendly. The sci-fi movie focused on the emotional bonding between a lost alien on Earth and the young boy, Elliot who finds and protects him. Over the course of time, they befriended each other. Later on, the young boy along with his siblings helped his extraterrestrial friend to return to his home safely while the task force is on a hunt for the alien. Gosh! A fantastic movie and we all would like to meet such an alien.

  • The Terminator (1984)

Who can forget the talented director James Cameron in the genre of sci-fi movies? He introduced us to the Terminator franchise which established its feet in the year 1984 with its first movie. The sci-fi spectacle unfolds with a cyborg assassin who travels back in time from 2029 to 1984 to assassinate a waitress whose unborn son is destined to lead a future war of humans versus machines. Another soldier is embarked on the journey to save that human leader from the advanced cyborg and to keep the hopes of humans alive.

  • Jurassic Park (1993)

A real masterpiece from a globally acclaimed director Steven Spielberg who brought the extinct dinosaurs to life on the big screen. Who could forget the breath-taking and terrifying roars of Dinosaurs who roamed freely in the Jurassic Park due to an accident? The sci-fi marvel completely shattered the box office record with global earnings of more than $1 billion dollars and was followed by other terrifying sequels later on. The film showcased the wonderful work of CGI effects, use of gigantic animatronic puppets and a brilliant sound mixing.

This sci-fi classic from Christopher Nolan is a thought-provoking, tricky yet gripping movie. The plot deals with the Dom Cobb, a skilled thief who is a master in extracting valuable information from people by entering their dreams. However, when he has lost everything, his only chance of redemption is by planting an idea into the mind of a CEO and perform the impossible feat. Will he and his team succeed or will they be trapped? Well, we will not give you more hints and you should better watch this movie right now.

  • Gravity (2013)

Discover the unfaltering marvel by Alfonso Cuaron that won the 7 academy awards out of ten nominations. It also gave Alfonso Cuaron his first Oscar award for best direction and the movie received a lot of global accolades. Gravity describes the ill fate of two astronauts who are on a spacewalk to fix problems of the space shuttle when a disaster strikes leaving the shuttle destroyed and one astronaut, played by George Clooney dead. The movie further shows how the surviving astronaut played by Sandra Bullock travels through the vast space alone and make efforts to land back safely on Earth.

So, get ready for some breath-taking and jaw-dropping scenes from these sci-fi movies and enjoy them with a bucket of popcorn in your leisure time. Truly a surreal experience indeed.
